Demystifying Compression Therapies and the Diseases They Treat
We have organized this information to serve patients and their doctors with answers to the common questions with regard to compression therapy. Finding the right compression product to treat debilitating diseases and their symptoms is often a godsend for those in pain, so we see it as our job to always be informed and to inform others in making the critical therapy choices. Compression therapy products can benefit a wide range of illnesses and symptoms, but here are the most common:
Lymphedema
When the lymphatic system is damaged lymphatic fluids from the affected area are unable to be transported adequately and the excess fluids build up and produce swelling. In addition, the proteins that leach out of the arterial capillaries build up, attracting more water and ultimately exacerbating the swelling. This condition is called lymphedema.
Venous Disease
Normally, the body’s arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from your heart to the rest of your body, and veins return oxygen-poor blood back to your heart. When the veins in the leg fail to pump enough blood back to your heart, the result is chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), also known as chronic venous disease (CVD).
Peripheral Artery Disease
PAD is the condition caused when enough plaque forms in the arteries to reduce blood flow to the legs and feet. The result is pain, poor circulation and a variety of other symptoms and complications.
Chronic Non-Healing Wounds
Wounds that fester and refuse to heal through typical treatment and bandaging can be a serious problem. There are a variety of reasons for this condition, ranging from bed sores to cancer treatment.
